Inland Meat Packers:
Real Time Data Collection System

Problem:

Customer was building a new meat processing plant and needed a real time production data collection system integrated with digital scales capable of printing bar-coded labels.

Dbase Software Package:

Specification

  • This system comprises of three different units in the plant. One unit is installed in the incoming hot rail scale where the carcass weight is recorded and bar-coded label printed. The other unit is the cold rail scale on which the cold carcass weight is recorded from freezer. The last unit is installed in the Boning room where box labels are generated and data is recorded. Management is able to pull the daily production data onto PC and generate summary/reports.
  • Can collect real-time data from scale stations and report to a central database
  • Can be used to track inventory
  • Custom database and collection systems available

Hardware/Software Support:

We provided customer with a solution that included 5 920i programmable indicators with bench, rail, and floor scales. There were two rail scales for weighing carcasses, 2 bench scales to print bar-coded labels for different cut types stuck to the box, and one shipping floor scale to record the meat being shipped.

  • The first rail scale is used to weigh the hot carcasses. This system also included a meat-grading gun to record the meat grade. The entire carcass related information was recorded and saved on the unit’s local database. Bar-coded labels are printed and attached to the carcass.
  • The second rail scale was used to record the weight of carcasses coming from the cooler. A wireless scanner is used to scan the information from carcass label and then save the new information on the unit’s local database. Customer downloads the database information to the computer from both rail scale units for inventory and reporting purposes.
  • The two bench units are used to weight different cut types, and then record and print carton labels. The units have a built in database of PLU to print bar coded labels with text information to stick them to the Box. The information is then loaded to PC for inventory purposes.
  • The Shipping unit records the products being shipped out for orders.
  • All the information loaded to computer is then used by a third party software to give the customer the option for processing orders onwards and more reporting options. The full system is linked via Ethernet network in the plant.
